English III Syllabus

Syllabus – English III

Mrs. Shimanek / Room 142     2020-2021 school year

English III will feature a survey of American literature and nonfiction (from Native American writings to modern literature/nonfiction). Students will conduct close readings and discussions of a variety of titles in thematic units and they will increase their ability to use textual evidence to prove an argument. Reading, discussing, and writing will be integrated throughout the course. Composition studies will include a variety of essay writing and creative writing. Critical thinking, synthesis skills, vocabulary acquisition, and grammar and mechanics will continue to be stressed in each unit to prepare the student for success in college and career. All juniors will be required to write a research paper using MLA documentation format. This class also helps prepare students for the ACT.

Poetry that will be covered includes works from Robert Frost, Rudyard Kipling, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickenson, Maya Angelou, and many others.

The material taught in this course will also assist students making career choices. It focuses on self-assessment in terms of educational and career opportunities and reasonable possibilities in the world of work. This includes assessment for personal/career interests, values, needs, attitudes, skills, and other potential, and exploration of occupational information to establish career and educational goals. Students will be expected to use their school email and use Google Classroom regularly.
